Loving...

File Photo

THIS BLOG is mostly going to be related to...dance parties, music you can dance to, the local party scene, hopefully not written up in not too much of a superficial or cloying manner. No promises on that last one.

As someone with my own promotional concern in town, YO! Jamz, I'll naturally be using this space as a point of promotion as well-so expect no hard-hitting claims of real journalism here-I'll just be trying my best to candidly remark on what's going on.

I would like today to say some good things about the Loving In The Name Of... series which has been running for some time now including this past friday. Initially getting going at Teranga, then Augusta House (sound familiar?), before noise-neighbour issues forced organizers to turn to...the Canadian Corps Legion Hall! A venue perhaps best known for the Country-fied Saddle Up! parties.

Loving's claim to fame is the cover band performance, which comes off with a great deal of talent (usually led by one Sebastian Grainger, pictured above in a different lifetime) on stage and even a crack dance troupe busting out some choreography to opener 'Dancing In The Dark'. Grainger's Springsteen was easily as confident as his Axl Rose, which he broke out for 'Paradise City' (usually my most reviled of all songs at karaoke, given most participants' tendencies to severely underestimate the undertaking).

Despite a Platinum Indie credentials in the house (both Brendan Canning and a young woman who bore an incredible resemblance to Feist, for example), the night was pleasantly free of attitude-perhaps the cheap drinks were keeping everyone more jovial than judgmental (a regrettable take on 'You Get What You Give' seemed easily forgiven). The night certainly has found its feet, and hopefully a longer term home.
